English Language and English Literature have always been an indispensable part of the discipline of Humanities, fulfilling their role of equipping learners with effective communication skills and imparting the broader social and ethical values of liberal humanism. However, in the new millennium of a post-globalised world, their demand and scope have increased much more than what it was in any other age. The proficient use of good language competence is a sine qua non of a technology-driven world where human interaction has been liberated from the temporal barriers of time and space. As users of English as an international language, it has become even more imperative to constantly upgrade and improve our skills, for all knowledge acquisition and dissemination depends on this vital human facility. English is not only the most
visible language of the arts and culture but also of science and technology, of business and commerce and of the web and internet. Therefore, its future is a future of limitless opportunities.
 
About the Department:
 
The Department of English was established in the same year as the founding of the College, i.e., 1956. The Department has a glorious tradition of eminent scholars who have served both as Heads of the Department and as faculty. These renowned savants include Father Victor Rocha, Sr.Eleanor, Father Lawrence Fernandes and Mr.A.M.George.

Course Structure:
 
Three-year Bachelor of Arts Degree Course wherein the subject is offered as:
Compulsory English
Supplementary English
English Literature
Communicative English, a vocational subject introduced by the UGC in only select colleges to train students for career opportunities in mass media.
Three years Bachelor of Science & Computer Science wherein English is a Compulsory Subject. Supplementary English is an optional Subject. 
 
Duration of the Course:
 
It is a Grant-in-aid Under-graduate course affiliated to Rashtrasant Tukdoji Maharaj Nagpur University, Nagpur. Approved by the Government of Maharashtra and recognized by UGC under 2f and 12b.
The Course is of three years duration. Examinations are conducted annually by RTM Nagpur University, Nagpur.
 
Communicative English:
 
The introduction of the new course called Communicative English has given the department an additional impetus. About 40 students are enrolled each year in this course. They are given special training in Communication Skills and English Language Skills. The overall Personality of the students has vastly improved, at the end of the three year course. They come out as self confident, young men and women ready to face the highly competitive modern world.
 
Admission Criteria:
 
Students who have passed the HSSC (10 plus 2) level are eligible for admission to the B.A./B.Sc. Course. At the B.A. level students can opt for Supplementary English, English Literature, Communicative English as electives, apart from Compulsory English. B.Sc. First year students can offer Supplementary English as a second language besides Compulsory English.
 
Subject Organisation / Society:
 
In June 2006, Dr.June D’Souza took over as the Head of the Dept. and along with her dedicated staff established the English Literary Association (ELA) in order to inculcate in students and lecturers a love of literature and at the same time develop in them a love of reading and writing and improving ones’ communicative skills like public speaking. This helps in improving pronunciation, accent, and voice modulation intonation etc.In other words to improve ones’ personality.

The society was inaugurated on 13th October 2006. Dr.Shymala Nair (Dept.of English, L.A.D.College), the chief guest of the function spoke on “Appreciating Literature and its finer Nuances.” Dr. S.Nair is a reader in L.A.D College and is a renowned academician and a poet.Dr. Shyamla Nair was welcomed to the portals of our great institute of knowledge by a welcome song invoking Gods’ blessings on this Literary Endeavour. Our Coppel Hall, the lush greenery and serene tranquility of S.F.S. College were reverberating with the mellifluous and melodious voices of ‘Angel and Company.’

Dr.Shyamla Nair gave us an enlightening talk on ‘Literature and its finer nuances.’ The talk was thought provoking and enlightening. It showed an insight into her analytical mind and her deep insight in the literary field. Tracing the history of Literature right from Euripides, it showed her vast knowledge over the subject. The talk was highly appreciated by all. This was followed by a question answer session wherein both students and teachers showed keen interest.

On 5th January 2007, an interclass Elocution Competition was held with a novel innovation wherein the students were judges. The unanimous decision went in favour of Bro.Angel of B.A Part-II.

On 20th January 2007, an interclass Competition on Calligraphy was held wherein the students again were judges.Sr.Anita of B.A Part-II was declared the winner.

A Poster Competition was held on 14th December 2007 to inculcate in the students universal peace, understanding and harmony. The topic of the competition was ‘Universal Brotherhood.’ Dr.June D’Souza compeered the programme.The vote of thanks was proposed by Bobit of B.A-II.

In today’s strife ridden world with bio-tech warfare, scientific nuclear warfare and much more dangerous and terrifying effects on humanity-The extinction of mankind is a possibility. Hence an essay competition on the topic ‘Is Gandhism relevant in today’s world’ was held on 2nd January 2008.

To improve ones’ accent, pronunciation, intonation and modulation of voice and above of all to gain self confidence and get rid of our stage fright,this new concept was introduced after giving students enough tips and examples. The competition was held on 15th January 2008.

Laughter- the Best Medicine Competition was held on 21st January 2008.

With modern day and its consequent stress and strain, problems and anxieties both students and teachers have often become victims of modern day malady i.e. stress. The best stress buster is laughter hence this competition.

The English, Literary Association for the session 2008-2009 was inaugurated on 8th Oct. 2008, by Dr. Shiriskar H.O.D. Annasaheb Gundewar College, Nagpur.

Dr. June D’souza H.O.D. (English) introduced the chief guest, Dr. Shiriskar and welcomed him with a bouquet. She spoke about the importance and relevance of literature and ethics specially in today’s world, where our attitudes have drastically changed and people have become more materialistic, this attitude should be changed and value education, ethics, Indian Culture and literary values must be inculcated. The staff, students, Principal and the Chief Guest applauded and gave Dr. June D’souza a standing ovation.

Dr. Shiriskar gave us an enlightening talk on Language, Literature and Society. With his deep and critical insight, Dr. Shiriskar said that Literature mirrored society. Tracing this history right from Chaucer’s time till the present day showed his analytical skill and mastery over his subject. He also gave us interesting incidents and quotation from Literature.
