Department of Zoology


The department of zoology was established in year 1959 -1960. The pioneers and pillars of the department are

1) Late Dr. S. S. Patwardhan: An eminent Researcher, curator and author of Prawn Memoir.
2)  Dr. C. B. Powar: Expert in the field of Genetics, Biochemistry, Cytology,       Biotechnology. He is the author of more than 25 books.
3)   Dr. P. N.Dixit: Researcher in Entomology.
4) Dr. J.D.Sahasrabuddhe: Eminent Researcher in Biochemistry, and Reproductive Physiology. Expert in Herpetology. He is the author of a number of books.
5) Dr. (Mrs.) P.J. Sahasrabuddhe: Eminent Researcher in Biochemistry and Reproductive Physiology.

Presently the Department is headed by Mrs.V.P.Pradhan, who is actively busy in Research in Environmental Science.

The primary objective of the department is to impart basic and recent knowledge of the subject. It also focuses on preparing the students to meet new challenges and create awareness of recent trends in the fields of Genetics, Bioinformatics etc.

Laboratories

The department has three laboratories
1) Zoology Laboratory.
2) Pathobiology Laboratory.
3) Photography laboratory.
There is also an instrument room and a museum with more then 100 specimens.



Library
In addition to the Central Library, the department also has a well maintained library with more then 200 books available for the ready reference of the students.

Events:

A Zoological Association named "PEARLS" has been functioning since the last few years. Under this banner, lectures, competitions and seminars by eminent personalities are organized.

"Pearls" provides an interactive platform to the students, which compliments their academic growth.

Course pattern:

B.Sc. (Bachelor of Science) is a three years under graduation course.

In the first year, the students appear for three theory papers of 40 marks each, and a practical examination of 30 marks.

Environmental Biology (Ecology).

Practical Examination - The students are assessed based on Dissections of invertebrates, Cytology experiments, Environmental Biology Experiment, study of specimens etc.

In the Second year, the students appear for three theory papers of 40 marks each, and a practical examination of 30 marks.

Practical Examination - The students are assessed based on dissections of Chordates, Genetics experiments, specimen and slide study.

In the Third year, the students appear for three theory papers of 40 marks each, and a practical examination of 30 marks.

General Mammalian Physiology.

Paper - II

Evolution, Ethology, Applied Ecology, and Animal Tissue Techniques.

Paper - III

Pathobiology and Clinical Laboratory Techniques.

Practical Examination - The students are assessed based on experiments in Haematology, Micro technique, Photography, Pathobiology, slides and museum study.

The students also are assigned with various projects and submissions.

Duration of the Course:

It is a Grant-in-aid Undergraduate course affiliated to the Rashtrasant Tukdoji Maharaj Nagpur University, approved by Government of Maharashtra and recognized by UGC under 2f and 12b.
It is a three years course and examinations are conducted annually by
Rashtrasant Tukdoji Maharaj Nagpur University.

Admission Criterion:

Any student who has passed XII with at least 45% marks with Physics, Chemistry and Biology is eligible to apply for the course.

The subject combinations available are

CBZ - Chemistry, Botany, Zoology.
CZBC - Chemistry, Zoology and Biochemistry.



Results:
The department very proudly states that the result is always between 97 - 100%.
