Department Of Sociology

Sociology as a discipline is very interesting, as it gives a person the tools to see beyond the visible and marks the invisible visible. It studies humans as related to each other in their human environment. These statements tell you that all disciplines that are read will benefit the reader if sociological perspectives are taken into account as every thing that happens on this earth affects all human beings. Humans create society. Society is the environment which humanizes a new entrant and makes him or her fit member of society. It is this basic relationship between the human person and the society that makes it all the more why people in all disciplines which remotely or proximately deal with humans and their natural environment must have a basic knowledge of sociology.
Reading sociology at the undergraduate level provides a person with a wide varied scope of employment suited to his taste and temperament. Social work and community work is an area which is opening up today which requires persons with basic knowledge of sociology. So also the health and legal services, Journalism and Media require sociologist. It also provides scope in self employment as researchers and consulters to NGOs, Government services connected with social welfare, business and advertising industry.

The Department was established in 1996. Since then many have successfully completed their course and are involved with community development and upliftment of the marginalized sections of society

Rev. Dr. Albert de Souza M.A., PhD. Lecturer Specialized in Tribal Development Spent 12 years working with the Tribals.

The Department invites experienced staff, social workers and activist to share their knowledge and experience with the students from time to time.

Course Structure
The department offers the student a three year course in sociology leading to a graduate degree awarded by the Rashtra Sant Tukdoji Maharaj Nagpur University. In the first year the student is made familiar with all the basic concepts used in sociology. They are also introduced to social phenomena called society, culture, the process of sociolization, social change, stratification and social control. In the second year the student learns to identify and understands social problems and how those problems could be reasonably solved or at least contained. The concept of development is clarified and issues involved with development are discussed. In the third year the student is offered a choice to read further in the subject of his choices- namely Social Theories, Methods of Social Research and Tribal society. As the students would be mostly involved with the marginalized social groups, the department offers them a detailed insight into a marginalized society; namely the tribal society.

VISION MISSION STATEMENT

OF

THE DEPARTMENT OF SOCIOLOGY

WE BUILD PEOPLE

AND

PEOPLE MAKE THE NATION

THIS VISION MISSION IS IMPLEMENTED THROUGH

SOCIOLOGICAL SOCIETY AND STUDY CIRCLE

SOCIOLOGICAL SOCIETY

Organizes exposure programme so that students have face to face experience of naked social realities.  Most often we live in a make believe world. Such exposure to raw realities awakes one from the world of dreams to hard truth. Such as happened to Siddhartha Gauthma transforming him into the Buddha.

Social awareness creates social responsibilities which the Sociological Society fulfills through various programmes for the marginalized.

Exposure Programme:- Visits to Old Age Homes, Visits to Institutions for differently able children, Visits to Slums, Visits to schools and Social exhibitions.

Students interact with the inmates, listen to them and organize entertainment for them. Students also encourage the inmates to put us some programme for the visitors. The whole idea is to make the inmates partners in dialogue of life and not just recipients of pity.

Visit to an Old Age Home

STUDY CIRCLE

Organizes: Guest lectures on topics of current interest, Paper presentations by students to make them confident and learn research techniques, Debates to build up their communication skills and logical reasoning, Seminars to learn more on current topics and develop organizing skills, Work Shops and Group discussion to develop affinity for team work. The Study Circle encourages a multi - disciplinary approach on related issues inviting faculty members of other disciplines. In going through these activities, the students pick up skills that the society is looking for and hence Ready Made.
