Department of Philosophy
Philosophy ::
Philosophy is known as the mother of all sciences. It deals with the
ultimate causes of things. It gives us a worldview. It deals with ultimate
realities in a critical way. Like all sciences, philosophy bestows direct
benefit on the individual.
Clarity of thought, logical reasoning and precise expression are the effects of
undertaking a study of the subject.
History, Advances, scope, etc
Built up area of the Department in 75 Sq. Mt.
The department monitors the overall performance of students through
regular assessments like unit tests, prelims, informal discussions, Brain
storming sessions, and seminars by students, and symposia.
The staff attends / participates in subject updates, seminars
conducted in the city colleges and university department of philosophy and by
giving lectures/ seminars on the invitation.
Two Irish priests Fr. Ephraem MCarthy O.P (1959- ) and Fr. Thomas Ryan O.P.
(1959-) started were the teachers in the early years. Fr. Ephraem MCarthy O.P
(1959- ) and Fr. Thomas Ryan O.P. (1959-) were the members of the Nagpur
Philosophical Society. The society met regularly and had fruitful sessions,
which were appreciated by all. Later Mr. Mule and Mr. Sathe succeeded them.
Fr. Anthony D’ Souza has been Head of the Department of Philosophy since
1977. In the course of time Fr. James Palakudy SAC (1993-2000), Fr. Deepak
Paulson O.P. (from 2000), and Fr. Walter Rodrigues O.P. were teachers in the
Department of Philosophy.
Teaching & Learning ::
Fortnightly seminars/ symposia, periodic assessment by way of unit tests, and
assignments are held during the academic session
Course Structure ::
Students of B.A. I have to study “Ethics (Indian and Western)” in depth.
Students of B.A. II have to study
Logic (Indian and Western)
Aristotelian Logic
Modern Logic (Symbolic Logic)
Students of B.A. III have to study
Epistemology and Metaphysics (Indian and Western)
Duration of course ::
It’s a three year degree course in bachelor of Arts in the faculty of
Social Sciences.
Admission Criteria ::
A student who has successfully passed the higher secondary education (XIIth
class) of a recognized board is eligible for admission to the B.A. I course.
Scope of the Subject ::
Some are appointed as Principals, Rectors, Administrators of Hospitals,
Agricultural farms, Directors of social work, human resource development
programme directors, counselors etc.
Research activity & Progression ::
Students have gone on to pursue further theological studies such as
bachelor of theology from Saint Thomas university Rome, Doctorate in various
theological subjects from Indian and foreign universities such as Germany, the
USA, Canada, Australia, and Italy besides Pune and Bangalore
Masters programs/PHD programs in social work and counseling from Indian
Universities, Manila, The Philippines and USA
Activities of the Department ::
“Morality and the individual - Recent trends in Moral Philosophy” a one
day seminar was conducted by philosophical society on 3rd March 2003. Dr. S.K.
Throat, professor at Post Graduate Teaching Department, R. T. M. Nagpur
University was the resource person.
A one-day seminar on “Metaphysics - Eastern and Western perspectives” was
conducted by Dr. Ms. Usha Gadkari, Ex-Head of the Department of Philosophy,
Dharampeth College on 13th Jan.2006

The student who obtains Highest marks in Philosophy over a three year
period as R. T. M. Nagpur University Examinations are awarded the following

1. Sir Arthur Blennerhassett Memorial Silver Medal.

Apart from the existing books and journals, the section of books in
Philosophy is being enhanced by the addition of fresh titles.
Good collection of textbooks, recommended books and many other books related to
the subject are being added to the collection- source books, commentaries, and
critical works of authors on related topics.
