Department Of Chemistry
The Department of Chemistry, which was established in the year 1957 is situated on the 3rd floor of the college building having built up area of 9500 sq. ft. and scenic surroundings with a bird eye view of the city.
COURSES OFFERED
H.S.S.C. Level
Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Biology, English and Hindi / Marathi.
Information and Technology subject can be opted in place of Hindi / Marathi /
Biology.
Graduate Level
The different subject options, which the students can offer with chemistry,
are
1. Chemistry, Zoology, Biochemistry.
2. Chemistry, Botany, Biochemistry.
3. Chemistry, Botany, Zoology.
4. Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics.
Post Graduate Level
M.Sc. Chemistry : Specilization ORGANIC CHEMISTRY
Elective paper MEDICINAL CHEMISTRY
The P.G. course is a non-aided course approved by Maharashtra Government and
affiliated to Rashtrasant Tukdoji Maharaj Nagpur University.
Course duration : Two years
Admission criteria : B.Sc with Chemistry as one of the subject / B.Sc Honours
in chemistry, with at least 50% marks at graduate level.
Intake capacity : 30
Hostel Facility : Separate hostel facility is available for boys and girl
students.

All the laboratries are well equipped, ventilated & spacious with every
student given a working space of approx 9sq.ft. The labs have L.P.G. gas line,
exaust fans, fuming cupboards etc.
The instrumentation laboratory has number of instruments like Computer, OHP,
Spectrophotometer, digital colorimeters, digital Potentiometers, digital
conductometers, digital pH meters, digital polarimeters, Ovens, Distillation
plant, Single Pan, double pan, analytical balances, digital balances, Vacuum
pumps, Centrifuge machines, melting point apparatus etc.
LIBRARY
The college has central library with reading room facility and about 1000
books in chemistry. The P.G. students are having free access to books. The
Department library has about 175 books for ready reference the teaching staff
for M.Sc. Students.
The department also subscribes following journals.

S.F.S. COLLEGE CHEMICAL SOCIETY & ITS ACTIVITIES

In order to cater to the intellectual need of the staff and students and to
keep themselves abreast of latest developments, applications and current trends
in chemistry the department has a society named S.F.S. College Chemical Society.
The proposed activities of the society is to hold popular talks, seminars, guest
lectures, study tours etc.
1. Inauguration : Dr G S Natarajan ,Director Priyadarsani Institute College
of Engineering Technology on 26th of August 2006.
2. Seminars:
• “Civil Defense and Chemistry” : By Capt. G S Saini Director Civil Defense
College Nagpur to all the UG. and P.G. students.
• “Power plant Chemistry” : On 25th November 2006. Shri H.M. Emmanuel Dy.
Director NPTI and Shri Pimplapure from MSEB were the resource persons.
3. Poster Competition : A poster competition was held on 7th Oct. 2006 for
U.G. and P.G. students .
4. Valedictory Function : The valedictory function of the chemical society
was held on 27th January 2007.Fr. Albert D’Souza Vice principal of College was
the Chief Guest.
AWARDS & MEDALS
The Department has instituted "Late Shri G.N. Jahagirdar" Medal for the
student of S.F.S. College, who scores highest marks in Chemistry at the B.Sc.
level in first attempt.
