Department Of Bio-Chemistry
Biochemistry
Biochemistry is not a simple derivative of Chemistry and Physics or Chemistry and Biology, though it is closely related to all of them. Modern Biochemistry is much more. In fact, it can be said that it is a blend of modern Science. It draws on so many different areas that it becomes difficult to decide where one ends and where another begins. The central theme of modern Biochemistry is to correlate the nature, properties and metabolic transformations of the chemical constituents of a living system, with its morphological structure on one side and its biological structure on the other. To understand the chemical makeup we have to depend on organic and inorganic chemistry because all substances present in biological systems are either organic or inorganic. To understand this correlation, a biochemist has to use many techniques drafted from and based on the concepts of physics and mathematics. Modern Biochemistry attempts to understand chemical composition, metabolism, morphological structure and biological function, one in terms of the other, and in this process it draws on a vast variety of knowledge and goes much deeper into the problems of life than any other branch of science has done or can do. Molecular biologists attempt to understand biological functions in terms of fine chemical structure and properties of various types of molecules which are present in biological systems. It is therefore extremely closely related to Biochemistry.
About The Department
Biochemistry department was established by S.F.S. College in 1984. It offers the subject at the undergraduate level. The department has highly qualified staff, well equiped laboratories, Instrumentation Centre and a library. Personal attention, guidance and individual handling of instruments and equipment are the Hallmarks of the Department. Since its inception in 1984, 11 students have secured positions in R. T. M. Nagpur University Merit List. An average pass percentage of students in last 10 Years is 81.60%.

Facilities :
Individual handling of instruments: Students are allowed to handle most of the instruments required for their laboratory work.

Some of the major instruments in the department include UV-VIS Spectrophotometer, Refrigerated Cold Centrfuge, Computers, Paper, Rod Gel, Submerged, Vertical Electrophoretic apparatus, TLC, Digital Colorimeters, pH meter, Serological water bath, Oven, Incubator, Autoclaves, Microscopes etc.
The Departmental library has about 90
books in addition to the books available in the Central Library of the College. The department also subscribes journals and science magazines like Science, Nature, Scientific American India, Resonance, Indian Journal of Experimental Biology, Genetic Engineering News, Dream2047, Indian Journal of Biotechnology, Indian Journal of Biochemistry and Biophysics, and Biophotonics.
Students have free access to computers in order to view various educational CD ROMs related to Biosciences, which are available with the department.
Course Structure :
There are two theory papers and one laboratory course work along with a written review work every year. In the three years of degree course the student will be learning about Physiology, Biomolecules, Microbiology, Virology, Immunology, Enzymology, DNA, RNA, Proteins, Biophysical & Biochemical techniques, Metabolism, Molecular biology and Biotechnology. Practicals are related to the above theoretical aspects.
Admission Criteria :
As per Nagpur University rules, a student offering science subjects at 10+2 level is eligible for admission to B.Sc. Course.
Combinations offered by the department are
1.) Biochemistry with Chemistry and Zoology
2.) Biocemistry with Chemistry and Botany
Biochem-Biotech Organization of S.F.S. Students(BOSS) :
The field of Biochemistry is growing rapidly and now it has become the basis for all current sciences like Genetic Engineering, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology and Immunology etc. The major problem is to keep track of recent developments and future
prospects for the students. With this in mind the Biochemical Organization of
S.F.S. Students ( BOSS ) was started in 2002.

With the addition of Biotechnology at the post graduate level in the College, it has been renamed as Biochem-biotech Organization of S.F.S. students (BOSS) starting from 2005-06 acaedmic session.
Aims and objectives of BOSS are - Organizing lectures on recent trends in Biochemistry, Biotechnology and related subjects. Lectures on general topics related to the overall development of students are also planned. This includes general Group Discussions, Facing an Interview, Public Speaking, Quiz, Debate, Personality Development, Stress Management, etc. The Organization, in future, also proposes to form an alumni association so that past and present students can interact with each other and be benefited by it. In addition, the Department, through BOSS, also plans to procure certain teaching aids, instruments, scientific literature which would immensely benefit the students.
The Organization has started its own Open Access Library, which presently has about 160 books and 7 journals either purchased, subscribed or received on Gratis. The Staff, Ex-Students and Students have contributed a lot in terms of additon of books and journals to this library.
